Have you noticed lately when you are searching for information about something through Google Search, the first couple of posts will have a picture of the Author to the left-hand side? This is part of the Google Authorship program – and it has tremendous benefits for Search Engine Optimization. There are plenty of resources out there on the subject of how to setup Google Authorship – but for some reason or another – it doesn’t always work. So, in order to help prevent frustration and to show the world your beautiful face, I wanted to take you through a step by step guide to making this happen – and a way to check to make sure it is working!
Step 1. Sign up for a Gmail Account and sign up for Google+
If you do not already have a Gmail account, go get one! It is as easy as going to Google.com and clicking the sign in button in the top right corner. That will take you to the Google login page. From there click the sign up button in the top right corner. Once you have created your email – Google will encourage you to sign up for Google+… and my SEO motto has always been – DO WHAT GOOGLE WANTS YOU TO! Create your Google+ profile – with your real name the way you want it displayed online – and make it look sexy.
Step 2. Create an @yourwebsitedomain Email addresss
The important thing here is to use the same name you are using on Google+, spelled exactly the same. Go to your hosting account and create an email account that is your Google+ Profile Name@yourdomainname.
Step 3. Add your Website to your Google+ Page
When you are looking at your profile page, click on the edit button and scroll to the Contributor tosection. Add your website.
Step 4. Sign up for Google Authorship
Now the important part – the actual signup. When you are logged into your gmail account with the corresponding Google+ profile that you want to use – go to this page:https://plus.google.com/authorship
Follow the instructions and sign up for Google Authorship. If approved by Google, your picture should show up in about a week.
That should be all you need! But often times – it isn’t. You followed every step and nothing works. Don’t you love computers? Well – don’t worry because you can test it and make sure Google Authorship is setup correctly.
Step 5. Testing Google Authorship without waiting a week
The first step is to setup Google Analytics. After doing this you can easily setup Google Webmaster Tools. These are awesome resources that can help you achieve your online goals, but more importantly, they will help with SEO and it is the only way to check to see if your Google Authorship is set up correctly.
Once you are all setup – go to the Google Webmaster Tools Dashboard and on the left hand tab – click on Other Resources. At the top of the next page should be a link for The Rich Snippet Testing Tool. Click on it!
You are now able to enter your URL and test to see if your picture is showing up. If it is not – you will be given suggestions on how to fix the problem. Good luck everybody! Let me know how it goes!
